If you’re anything like me, January 1st rolls around, and you suddenly feel the itch to dive headfirst into some sort of crafty project. You’re determined to start something—but deciding what can be overwhelming. To help, I’ve compiled a list of fun and inspiring ideas that might be just the spark you need. Whether you’re looking to create, save, reflect, or learn, there’s something here for everyone.
Here are some fun, crafty projects to try this January:
1. Temperature Blanket
Crochet or knit one row each day based on the temperature outside. Assign different colors to temperature ranges (e.g., blue for chilly days, red for hot ones), and by year’s end, you’ll have a colorful, weather-inspired blanket. It’s a cozy way to track the year’s ups and downs—literally! Check out this tutorial from Fox & Pine Stitches!
2. Embroidery Hoop Challenge
Grab an embroidery hoop and stitch something small every day. It could be a flower, a word, or even just a decorative line. By the end of the year, you’ll have a stunning, intricate piece of art that tells your story. Check out this tutorial from Stir Crazy Crafter!
3. Bullet Journal with Yearly Trackers
Start a bullet journal to keep track of your moods, habits, and goals. Include a mood tracker where you color-code your emotions daily or a habit tracker to monitor progress on things like exercise, hydration, or reading. It’s a great mix of creativity and productivity.
4. The Gratitude Jar
Place an empty jar in a special spot, and every day, write down one thing you’re grateful for or a small win you achieved. At the end of the year, open the jar and relive all those special moments. It’s a heartwarming ritual to remind yourself of the good in every day.
5. The $5 Jar
This idea came from a college professor of mine who saved thousands of dollars with it. Anytime you get a $5 bill, put it in a jar. It’s amazing how quickly the savings add up (if you use cash) and it’s a fun little challenge to keep yourself consistent.
6. One Second Every Day App
I’ve been using the One Second Every Day app since 2018, and I have a video for every year since. It’s such a simple way to document life—just one second of video each day. By the end of the year, you’ll have a beautiful highlight reel of your daily moments.
7. Learn a New Skill or Hobby
Whether it’s a new language with Duolingo, painting, knitting, or starting a podcast, dedicate a small amount of time each day/week to learning something new. Progress, no matter how small, is incredibly satisfying.
